美咲の出番は、人気曲「ヘビーローテーション」のイントロだった。センターの小嶋陽菜の代役——怪我で急遽降板したあとの穴埋めだった。プレッシャーで手足が震えた。しかし、幕が上がる直前、先輩の横山由依が耳元でささやいた。

パフォーマンスが終わり、カーテンコールで彼女の名前がコールされた。客席から、小さな「ミサキ」コールが起こった。それは決して大きな声ではなかった。しかし、その温かさが彼女の胸に染みた。

AKB48の劇場は、いつも汗と願いの匂いで満ちていた。でも、今日の夜公演は特別だった。研究生の山下美咲にとって、これがラストチャンスだった。彼女はもう3年間、バックダンサーとして、選抜メンバーの影で必死に笑ってきた。今日の公演で一人でもお客さんの心に残らなければ、契約は更新されない。
