Abstract Katana Zero (Askiisoft, 2019) uses tight time-manipulation mechanics and a fractured neo-noir narrative to explore determinism, trauma, and player agency. The fan-made “Fifteen” mod re-centers the story on a minor antagonist—Fifteen, the “Dragon Killer”—transforming him into a playable protagonist. This paper argues that the mod succeeds not by copying the base game’s formula, but by subverting its core mechanics and narrative framing to reflect a different psychology: raw aggression over calculated precognition. Through analysis of altered movement, combat pacing, and cutscene integration, we show how fan modifications can function as critical commentary on the source material. 1. Introduction Katana Zero places players in the role of Zero, a amnesiac assassin who uses a drug (Chronos) to preview and retry combat scenarios. The game’s central tension lies in knowing the future but being unable to change its worst outcomes. The “Fifteen” mod, created by modder ShatteredReality (2021), swaps the protagonist with Fifteen—a rival who wields a broadsword and lacks Zero’s precognitive refinement.
