In the cramped, humming server room of the old Ministry of Archives, Kaelen found it. Tucked behind a decommissioned cooling unit, the label read:

On the seventh replay, the square was empty except for the woman. She walked toward the camera until her face filled the 320x240 window. Pixelated, yes. But her eyes were clear.

Kaelen froze. The footage was dated forty years ago. Before Kaelen was born. Before the Quiet Wars. Before the government mandated all public recordings be scrubbed of "unstable temporal markers."

Kaelen backed away slowly. The wafer was still spinning. The woman’s face, frozen in 320x240 pixels, smiled—a patient, terrible smile.
