Inside is Vanilla’s sanctuary —a frozen garden of crystallized sugar roses. And in the center, Vanilla sits on a throne made of white thorns, eyes closed, hair turned silver-white.

“…Pierre’s human self. The boy in the photograph.” Pierre nods: “He died of a broken heart when we witches left the human world fifty years ago. But his heart was so sweet, it became a seed. Vanilla has been protecting it. And now… it’s fading.” Flashback within flashback: A young Vanilla, age 7, holding a dying human boy’s hand.

Once vibrant, now its skies are pale orange like a perpetual sunset. The rivers of candy have turned to water. Witches whisper: “The Queen without a rival has no flavor.”

She sits on the dusty floor, her royal dress torn at the hem. Her scepter lies beside her—dull, unlit. “I’ll keep your heart safe
